Knightsbridge: The Rib Room

RR1 By Roberto Aveiro

Hailed as a gastronomic institution within the chic environs of Knightsbridge, the Rib Room’s reputation certainly precedes itself as I arrive. The entrance to the restaurant opens up to an elegant and spacious bar that very much puts you in mind of the Great Gatsby era – it’s grand but not ostentatious; just the right amount of glamour. A couple of pre-dinner cocktails later – expertly made Bellinis – my guest and I were escorted to our table where that reputation began to show itself. For such an esteemed venue the dining options are refreshingly simple: the Classic Menu, the Seasonally Modern and the Private Dining Menu.

My initial choice of Beef Tartare (which was explained and prepared at the table) was truly exquisite, while my guest’s decision to experience the timeless Prawn Cocktail was met with approving nods.  The Rib of Beef was next on my wish list and it arrived just as I imagined it: daintily presented, succulent and flavoursome. Each course was intuitively complemented by some of the most exciting wines I’ve had this year which came expertly recommended by Head Sommelier, Louise Gordon.

For dessert, I opted for the Raspberry Soufflé that sent my taste buds into a state of delirium; my guest went traditional with the cheese board – complete with a selection of chutneys and the most delightfully tasty truffle honey. With only a hint of murmuring from our dining neighbours, the atmosphere all evening was blissfully understated. Completely satiated, I lightly pondered on the essence of the Rib Room – a classic venue that deserves every accolade that was bestowed upon it over its half a century existence.

French Delicacies

Sipping on Moët & Chandon is definitely one of our favourite luxuries and we’re equally elated that the leading champagne brand has teamed up with the Michelin three-star chef Yannick Alléno. Formerly of Le Meurice in Paris, this collaboration resulted in the opening of Le &—a pop-up restaurant set within the L’Orangerie reception space in Moët & Chandon’s historic estate which dates back to the early 1800s. The experience begins in the property’s glasshouse reception area with a selection of seven appetizers called the 7 Salt Bar.

Each of the dishes—including dim sum with pork extract and mushroom, fregola sarda pasta with shellfish, and oyster with cucumber extract—is served with Moët Impérial and explores how salinity interacts with the bitterness and acidity from the grapes, the earthy umami from the yeast, and the sweetness of the dosage. Guests then migrate to the main dining room, which features chandeliers crafted from Moët bottles and a central open kitchen with Molteni appliances. Here, pike terrine brioche is served with mushroom extract, butter, lobster coral, and the rich Grand Vintage Collection 1985, which has hints of preserved mirabelle plums. Roasted lamb chop with potato and onion is paired with the creamy pomelo notes of the Grand Vintage 2006.

After dinner, guests are guided into a dimly lit space meant to heighten the senses of taste and smell; there they are served three shots of concentrated parsnip that was cooked sous vide and then run through an ice-cream maker several times. The potent reduction is served alongside glasses of pale-yellow Grand Vintage Collection 1999, which exhibits refined notes of nectarine and currant. The evening is concluded back in the dining room, now transformed into a lounge bar with overstuffed chairs, neon illuminated art, a DJ, and a dessert menu that pairs the romantic and fruity Moët Impérial and Grand Vintage Collection 1999 with creative delicacies such as strawberry soup, Baulus cake with beer ice and beer pie, and stirred yogurt with gelled corn extract and popcorn.

Louis Vuitton: Carbon-fiber Luggage for the BMWi8

Frequent business travelers often encounter slinky shapes and innovative mechanical configurations of exotic cars that often end up leaving odd pockets for luggage. But with the introduction of the new BMW i8, the German marque collaborated with Louis Vuitton to create a collection of four pieces of carbon-fiber luggage specifically designed for the i8 that are decorated with the fashion house’s famed Damier pattern. Designed to make your travel experience easier, they are exceptionally light and the carbon-fiber textile used in the construction of the bags is also extremely durable. A padlock engraved with “LV” keeps the bags’ contents safe and secure, while leather name tags should help to avoid confusion in the unlikely event that an identical set is already on the conveyor belt or the bellhop’s trolley.

Each of the four bags is equipped with dyed natural-leather handles, and the large Weekender GM i8 also has a shoulder strap for easy carrying once it is removed from the forward trunk of the two-plus-two sports coupe. (The mid-mounted power train takes up the space behind the cabin.) The Garment Bag i8 lies on the package shelf, while the smaller Weekender PM i8 rests atop the Business Case i8, which conforms to the contour of either rear seat. Inside each bag, a microfiber lining in charcoal gray and electric blue echoes the color scheme of the car. The i8 luggage series is available upon request at Louis Vuitton boutiques worldwide.

Picchio Boat

By Karen Brost

It’s time to take everything you ever knew about catamarans and set it aside, because award-winning designer Christian Grande has created a game-changing new catamaran concept. Named the “Picchio Boat,” this revolutionary vessel is designed to cruise for extended periods (up to 2,500 miles) while honoring family life and demonstrating a respect for nature.

Spanning a lengthy 71 feet, the Picchio Boat contains a central salon with spacious living and dining areas. The salon also features a unique “submarine observatory” set between the hulls that allows passengers to view marine life, even at night with the aid of special underwater spotlights.

The master cabin, accessible from the piloting area, has a glass floor under the bed to give the impression that it is floating on an illuminated sea. The cabin is also equipped with a large wardrobe, vanity desks and a spacious private bath. The boat’s lower deck includes two spacious VIP cabins with private baths, the galley and a children’s playroom with foldaway berths. Lounges for relaxation are located on the stern and forward balcony. The environmentally-friendly Picchio is also equipped with two Volvo Penta IPS engines to reduce her fuel consumption by one-third compared to other engines.

Al fresco Dining: Wine Accessories

With summer in full swing, this is the ideal time to take advantage of the breathtaking weather conditions and experience great al fresco dining. If you’re one who likes to host such events, or will be in attendance, here’s a list of six wine accessories that’ll help you seal the deal.

Cheshire Wine & Picnic Basket is a gorgeous accompaniment to any picnic and has everything you’ll need. The set includes ceramic plates, glass wine glasses, stainless flatware, cotton napkins, a food cooler, an insulated wine pouch, spill proof salt & pepper shakers, wood handle cheese knife, stainless waiters corkscrew, and—not to be forgotten—a fleece blanket.

If it’s a trek to your picnic destination, you might want to bring along the Ravi instant wine chiller. This little gadget attaches to the mouth of the bottle and chills the wine as you poor.

Pour without pulling the cork with the Coravin Wine Access System. This handy device allows wine to flow out without oxygen getting in. When it’s removed from the bottle the cork expands back to its place, sealing the bottle.

The London Lux Wine & Cheese Cooler includes 2 acrylic wine glasses, a corkscrew, bottle stopper, cheese board with knife, and coordinating napkins.

The Fida Mat by Patrick Frey provides supportive seating anywhere. In just a few simple steps the unfurled folding mat is transformed into a fully functional, comfortable piece of seating.
